Grandchildren Chi

All children are special, but grandchildren are God's reward for patience. Or to better explain it, for not "doing your own children in," so that you may "be blessed and multiply"!

Yes, grandchildren Chi is different than your own children's Chi. Instead of hearing yourself scream, "get out of the kitchen, you're making a mess," you might say, "come in the kitchen. Let's make a mess!" Same words, different tone, different day, different generation….

Last week I talked about the Chi of my first grandchild, who is my joy, loves everyone and will talk to a stick. This story is about my second grandson, who is the delight of my life. His caramel-colored hair glows like the crown of a prince, and he has a heart of gold. On sleepover nights, I love to dry and comb the mass of wavy curls swirling around his head. The minute my back is turned he restyles the coiffure. His green eyes are as pure as an Irish sunset, soft yet strong, and if you have seen an Irish sunset, you will understand the spirit of this boy. A false brooding silence hides his thinking process until he figures out how to con grandma into something. Do I know it? Of course, but it is fun to watch the "wheels" turn in his head. Yes, he will be a winner, if the wheels are going in the right direction!

His walk is tough, with a John Wayne swagger, and the little girls have already taken notice! His coyness is a put-on. On our outings the 8 year old holds on to my shopping cart for protection, then quickly turns around to see if the last little girl passing by, noticed him. With shoulders reared back and chin high, he says, "That was Patty. She used to be in my preschool, but she isn't in my class anymore." "Oh, how come?" I asked. "I dono" he responds. Another mystery with unknown facts fills the space, as we quietly head toward the toy section. Now a smile appears on his cute mouth, revealing his latest colored coordinated braces. "Wow, they finally got in the new and greatest ever ……hoop-te-do man. He turns into a flying machine that shoots a zillion trilongs and explodes when you push the hidden zapper button. Oh, please, grandma, I will pull a trillion, gazillion weeds and wash your car with cleaner, etc., etc., etc." His eyes are now the shade of a green traffic light. "Go, go, go," they say. How can I say no to this little lion cub who, when asleep, looks like a Buddha Baby. Shopping with my little entrepreneur is an experience. He deals in facts and figures and never gives up.

We have walked in rainstorms, picked up snakes, bugs and other crawling creatures. The call of baby eagles sends his keen eyes upward, and he will wade through mud, snow and water to catch a critter. Sitting patiently, a squirrel will eat out of his fingers, or I will see him from the kitchen window sitting on a rock talking gently to a chipmunk. He is never bored with work. I own a newly streaked car, inside and outside to prove it. An empty glass cleaner bottle and a roll of dirty paper towels are proof of his ambitions to make money. This well-rounded lad is also my sous-chef and is learning his way around the kitchen. From cooking to telling large stories, sometimes too large, love for a grandchild is pure and full of Chi like no other relationship. Each child is different. Never compare one to the other or you risk burying their uniqueness. Enjoy each child's different Chi!
