West Meets East© By Caroline Patrick The American College of Surgeons 88th Clinical Congress
How does feng shui relate to the American College of Surgeons? Many months ago while working on a painting at my art studio for the entry to a client’s home depicting the element of water which encourages the flow of money into any home, I was startled by the ring of the telephone. The process of creating art involves the process of allowing you to float into the painting and feel the water, or feel the earth, sky, trees or body of the image. My body felt a sudden jerk, similar to the feeling everyone has when that dreaded alarm clock jolts your body, mind and spirit back to the real world for another day of the yang world of reality. This necessary masculine energy is what gives us the ability to jump into our latest project and enter the work place. Hopefully you love your work and life is great. Most of us live somewhere in between these worlds waiting for the perfect situation to occur. I hate to bring you this update, but you are the one and only one which has the key to open these opportunities. Using feng shui as a tool to move forward toward your God-given talents helps you see where the blockage might be in your environment, health, or maybe a wall of blame and anger is holding back the flow of success you desire. Hearing the phone again, I run to the phone just in time to catch the live call before the answering machine kicks in. My mood was ‘iffy’ because of the creative interruption. "Hello, Caroline’s Arts and Feng Shui Shoppe, may I help you?" I answered. "Hi, this a representative for the American College of Surgeons Convention, is this Caroline Patrick?" "Yes," I replied. Another telemarketing call, I determined. Now, judgmental and irritated at the unnecessary interruption with my connection to my inner self and its impact at my latest creation, I began to recite my reply to this woman’s questioning. "Calm down and listen politely to her, It could be an important call, you never know," I determined. " I have been given your name as a entertaining speaker and would like to know if you would consider speaking before our group on -----how do you say it, fin shooie?" she asked. My interest peaked because I love to teach people about feng shui and how it works in anyone’s life, regardless of their belief system, since it is a mathematical formula of life put together thousands of years ago by many cultures and recorded by the Chinese to have balance and harmony in their living and working environment. I gave her the details for my requirements and gave her a verbal resume of my knowledge on the subject. We made the necessary arrangements for the speaking engagement. She would send me a contract to fill out for the commitment. A six-hour mapping the Home Workshop would be presented for the American College of Surgeons for their lifelong learning social program. The spouses of the surgeons and some surgeons would be attending. Thirty were expected to enroll. "Well, that will be fun." I surmised, as I returned to my masterpiece. "See Caroline, never live in expectation, and always live in awareness that way the flow of opportunity is always at your doorstep." My mind jumped back to the previous weekend when I trimmed the overgrown bushes from my wealth corner, or far back left corner to may home and cleaned out the water fountain outside the house. These two actions can help clear the way for prosperity. The seasons of spring and summer went by as I forgot the commitment for the fall workshop. As September approached, I noticed the notation of the upcoming scheduled event. I cleared my desk to clear my brain and began the process of creating a six-hour presentation. "Oh my god, did I say six hours, what did I do that for?" Talking for six hours is not a problem when hanging out with friends, but I began to get nervous at the thought of sounding intelligent for six hours. " Oh, I forgot the lunch break and maybe an afternoon break would help the time schedule," I decided. Putting the book together for the class wasn’t too difficult, since I have many stories to share with five years of written experiences. Slowly I compiled information on each triad of the bagua, the eight sided grid used to place over a floor plan to determine where each station or section of your life’s aspects are positioned in your present home or business. Using this grid, you see where your problem areas are represented in your current structure. The night before the program, I headed toward San Francisco toward the Hilton, deciding to find my classroom and settle in. The hotel was swarming with energy. After checking in with the program director, I realized fifty some people would be taking the class from over fifty states and other countries. "Don’t panic," I cautioned, "I accomplished childbirth, I can and will do this," I cheered. My first instinct was to order a doughnut, but intuitively decided fish would be a better choice. The next morning the sun did come up as usual and my working helpers arrived to make me look good. Paula, Colleen and Tina began setting up the large room for the class while my devoted Barbara stayed behind in the Shoppe to hold down the fort. Excitement filled the room as we brought in the five elements in the shapes and colors of water, wood, fire, metal and earth with flowers, scarves, plants, metal objects and candles. The room glowed as the lights were dimmed creating a warm and cozy feeling for the feng shui class. People filled the seats and I began to bring the ancient knowledge of many ancestors back to our modern society. Questions continued throughout the day and the time flew. Later in the afternoon some of the surgeons joined the class as they also listened to the art of placement. I kept my herbal education low keyed, until I was asked several question about herbs during the phase of the workshop relating to each section of the homes center or earth area. Blindly I went forward into the actions of certain herbal formulas. "Each section of the bagua is also related to a body part," I explained. "Chinese medicine uses these same components for diagnosis." The day ended and we had accomplished another good deed. It felt good. Although I have spoken before large groups of two hundred or more, this particular group was initially intimidating, I chose to go forward. Use your knowledge and share what you know and feel the rewards of using your talent. If you feeling like running away from your purpose, I suggest running into the wind and finding your purpose. If negative chitchat fills your thoughts, the only reply needed is, cancel, cancel!!! And go for it. Originally I decided to open my talk with "Is there a doctor in the house?" but changed my mind as I read the large program book for the two-week conference. I concluded almost every surgeon in the United States and many other countries were in the hotel for the conference. A few of the sessions were devoted to the continuing education of these special physicians. To name a few, cardiothoracic, colon and rectal, gynecology and obstetrics, neurological, ophopaedic, otorhinolaryngology, pediatric, plastic, urological, and vascular. Sometimes it is more appropriate to remain silent and stick to what you know. Feng Shui Class Setting the Feng Shui Energy – 5 Element Altars
